The lights rise and the shot zooms in on Tim.] Hello again, fans! I'm your host Tim Dross and welcome to "Inside the IIWF." Things continue to heat up in the number one federation in the universe and I'm here to break it all down for you. Tonight I'll have news and thoughts on Dan Kauffman's planned retirement, the warring factions that seem to be forming in the IIWF, the return of The White Phoenix Shinja Chow, and much more. And I'll visit with the American Patriot in our "Up Close and Personal" segment. In short, I'll have all the news and notes to bring you up to date on what's happening in the IIWF. Let's start with a glance at the results from Saturday night's big show at the IIWF Coliseum, right here in downtown Portland: IIWF SATURDAY NIGHT January 25, 1997 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ HIGHWAYMAN & NIGHTWING def. DIRT DOG UNIQUE ALLAH & SERGE ANNIS CASEY JAMES def. NED NORTON LORD BYRON def. SUBWAY PSYCHO MR. DAMAGE def. HARLEQUIN CHAOS THE HANGMEN def. BRODY THUNDER ************************************************************************** ---------------------- TIM DROSS BREAKS IT DOWN ------------------------ ************************************************************************** THE ONCE AND FUTURE KING... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dan Kauffman was on top of the e-wrestling world when he captured the IIWF World Heavyweight Championship from Otto Verhoeven on November 9th. That night, he left the ring with the ultimate prize in wrestling. It was the culmination of years of hard work and dedication to the very sport he loved. During the past two months, however, something changed. Kauffman grew increasingly aloof while being pursued by the eerie Cadaver. He became paranoid while keeping an eye on the maniacal Casey James. And, while fending off challenges from every corner of the IIWF... something snapped. Perhaps his change in attitude made wrestling simply a job. Or perhaps the demands of wrestling led to his changed attitude. Whatever prompted the decision, Dan Kauffman has one of the biggest battles facing him during the next month -- winning back the trust of the IIWF's fans. When he and the Players' Club brutally attacked Chris Quigley earlier this month, he lost more than a gold strap, more than a match, more than blood. That night, Dan Kauffman lost the faith of the little "Kauff-maniacs" who said their prayers and took their vitamins every day. More importantly, though, Kauffman may have lost the faith of some members of the IIWF front office. As I reported on the hotline Sunday, the IIWF Executive Committee was evenly split on Kauffman's future in the IIWF. Granted, the "future" in this case is less than eight weeks, but I understand from a few members of the IIWF Executive Committee that Kauffman's attitude during the next two weeks could determine whether he is remembered by history as a standout champion of the IIWF -- or just another wrestler. BUSINESS IS BUSINESS... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ For the past few days, I've been thinking about what an impressive group it would make if the Players' Club accepts the offer and stands beside Brody Thunder and "Outlaw" J.W. Hardin against the Syndicate. You'll recall that Thunder and Hardin charged to the ring and helped vanquish the Dark Disciples Saturday night before returning the IIWF World Heavyweight Championship belt to Kauffman. The Players' Club returned the favor as we went off the air, but each group went its separate way when the jobber justice squad broke up the brawl. One comment sticks with me from Saturday night: Hardin's comment that destroying the Syndicate could be Kauffman's legacy. In fact, not since the IIWF formed has the Syndicate appeared more shattered and vulnerable than it is right now. Will the Players' Club accept the offer and join Hardin and Thunder? I guess we'll find out this week. THE TIGER CLAUSE... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Fans have been asking me since we went off the air about Tiger Claw's status with the Syndicate. We saw Claw actually fire Brian Lau early in the show, seemingly breaking all ties with the Syndicate. However, Lau, Casey James, and the Dark Disciples later came to Claw's aid and actually helped him defeat Brody Thunder in the main even. But isn't that what Claw is upset about? At every turn, Lau or James has been getting involved in Claw's matches, which has other wrestlers debating Claw's actual skill level. Now you can imagine how that talk hurts a three-time champion, and I understand he wants to go it alone to prove that he _is_ talented enough to be a true champion. For the first time since he entered the IIWF, Tiger Claw heard cheers Saturday night. He seemed to like that. I was able to obtain a copy of Tiger Claw's contract on Sunday and he does have a clause which permits him to break all ties with his manager at his discretion. According to the front office, that clause had not yet been exercised as of this morning, but Claw is not scheduled to wrestle this week and he may be seeking legal advice. Whatever his decision, this is a distraction the Syndicate does not need with a big Double Championship match coming up this Saturday against Dan Kauffman, Danny Dynamite, and Michael Reyna. A PHOENIX ON FIRE... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Shinja Chow made a sudden return to the IIWF ring last Saturday, but it wasn't how many fans wanted to see him come back. You'll recall that Chow attacked Hakiro Matsuoko at Snow Brawl before leaving for a one-month sabbatical and tour of China. I, for one, thought that would be a cooling off period for the Phoenix... so to speak... but old wounds seem to have only festered during his time away from the IIWF. When he returned Saturday night, Shinja Chow was no longer dressed in his white ring attire. He wore all black, which I understand has ominous connotations in the Orient. Coupled with what we saw on Friday, when Chow was accompanied by an elderly, fire-scarred man, I suppose... well, I won't jump to conclusions. But his attack on Takezo Musashi Saturday night may have been only the tip of the iceberg. FORCES TO BE RECKONED WITH ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ When a tag team loses a manager or adopts a change of attitude, the team usually must undergo growing pains. However, this hasn't been the case recently for NavCom and DefCon, the team known as The Armed Forces. It's been more than two weeks since the duo moved Aaron the Caddy behind the scenes and began wrestling clean matches. Perhaps the fruit of their labor was seen more in Saturday's match against the Players' Club. Not only were Nav and Def greeted with loud cheers from many in the IIWF Coliseum, but they gave the Players' Club all they wanted -- with IIWF World Heavyweight Champ Dan Kauffman on the outside. The Armed Forces got the win, albeit a tainted one, when Dynamite and Reyna were counted out while battling the Dark Disciples, but take nothing away from the Forces. They're still the number three contenders for the IIWF World Tag Team belts and they know what those belts feel like around their waists. I first noticed this change of attitude in the Forces at Snow Brawl, when they found that they could indeed compete with the best teams in the IIWF without Aaron at ringside. The other factor was the reception they received from the partisan military crowd at Armstrong Air Force Base that night. Now, Nav and Def are winning over fans and still winning matches. The military can truly be proud of these men now. BEYOND THE TERRORDOME... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ One of the most brutal matches we've ever witnessed in the IIWF took place Saturday night, when Creed and The Sandman bloodied each other in a steel cage known as the Terrordome. Although The Sandman came out on the short end of the decision, he proved that he knows his way around a steel cage and he stood toe-to-toe with one of the tougher competitors in the IIWF. As for Creed, the "CEO" Jack Montgomery reportedly wanted the rest of the IIWF to sit up and take notice during Saturday's match. Montgomery told me following the match that he has Intercontinental Championship aspirations for Creed in the near future. My personal belief is that Creed may need a bit more seasoning before jumping into a mix that includes the champion Marty Warnett, Steve Kowalski, and Billy Shakespeare, just to name a few. WHAT STARS IN FRONT OF MINE EYES... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ And speaking of Billy Shakespeare, I have good news to report on that front. Despite the trauma to his skull area, I'm told by doctors that Billy is recovering surprisingly well. The doctors added that Billy could return to the ring soon -- with one stipulation. Apparently, such blows to the head can have severe implications, even more severe than doctors can comprehend, so they are suggesting that Billy wear protective head padding when he competes in the ring. I spoke with IIWF Vice President Steve Owens about this earlier today. He confirmed only that the IIWF front office has requested and received medical information from Billy Shakespeare's doctors, adding that the IIWF Executive Committee would be discussing the legitimacy of wearing a protective device while wrestling. Owens then mumbled something about painkillers being better than a back brace and wandered off down the hallway. We'll keep you informed on the executive committee's decision. IS IT A JUNIOR SENATOR OR THE SENATOR, JUNIOR? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Spectators at ringside were doing a double-take Saturday night as a gentlemen who more than vaguely resembled the late Senator made an appearance during The Hangmen's match with the Posse. As I reported on the hotline on Sunday, I learned that the man in question is actually the _son_ of the Senator. Now the question remains... why is he here? Will he be taking over the day-to-day business decisions of The Hangmen? Was he the man we've been seeing at previous IIWF events? Are The Hangmen amenable to working with him? I was unable to contact either party by early this afternoon, but those are all questions which I'm sure will be answered during the coming days. SOUNDBITE... BITES! WATKINS... FIGHTS! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The more I work with "Soundbite" Steve Roberts, the more I never fail to be amazed at his foolish pride. You all know by know that Roberts backed out of his scheduled match with Ronnie Paris Saturday night, opting to turn the ring duties over to this mysterious newcomer Spur. Roberts claims that his insurance company has barred him from competition, but that didn't stop him from laying in a few shots on Paris. The hardest shot of the night, however, was reserved _for_ Roberts -- and it was delivered by none other than one Mad Dog Watkins. The fans had no problem with that, but Watkins' cheap shot on Ronnie Paris was completely uncalled for. I thought we had seen the end of the impressive battles between Watkins and Paris following the Iron Man match, but sources tell me that Paris returned to El Paso with a fire in his eyes. There is a certain resilience in youth, as I'm sure Mad Dog Watkins will learn when Ronnie Paris returns. However, Mad Dog Watkins made it known Saturday night that he has an open contract waiting for anyone in the IIWF. I called the front office before we went on the air and no one... I repeat, NO ONE has signed on the dotted line to meet the cagey veteran. Fans, I've never seen the stars of the IIWF shy away from someone as they seem to have Watkins. Perhaps someone will step up to the plate this week. IT'S DeWINTER OF OUR DISCONTENT... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ My sources tell me that it's no coincidence that Lady DeWinter made an appearance at Marty Warnett's title match against Chris Quigley on Saturday. In fact, I'm told that the wilted rose she carried was the same one Warnett presented to her last year as symbol of an apology. The old saying goes, "forgive and forget." Apparently the Lady DeWinter forgave Marty... but she didn't forget him. I'm willing to be that Lord Byron won't be happy with this little turn of events -- and let's not forget that he holds the key to Lady DeWinter's financial future. But that may be the least of Marty's problems these days. Rumors continue to abound in the locker room of a personal problem eating at Warnett, although his friends won't say what that problem is. It couldn't come at a worse time, as Marty is to defend his IIWF Intercontinental Championship belt Saturday night against the former champ Steve Kowalski. I hear rumblings from the front office that Kowalski is pushing for... shall we say "certain stipulations" in that match. By way of elaboration, I'll only say that Kowalski seemed very interested in the Terrordome match on Saturday -- and I don't think it was because of The Sandman or Creed. A "CD" CHARACTER IN THE SOUND BOOTH... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ It was music to no one's ears Saturday night when "Sychosys" Joe Petrow broke into the PA booth, where he remained for the rest of the night, and replaced IIWF wrestlers' usual theme music with tunes of his choice. I doubt Petrow's selections were random, either: "Entrance of the Clowns" for the Players' Club? "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting" for Casey James? "Real American" for the Subway Psycho? I think everyone in the Coliseum could have done without "The Macarena," though. This is the latest move in Petrow's seemingly unpredictable game plan here in the IIWF. He stole the IIWF World Tag Team belts from the Dark Disciples, delivered them personally to the Players' Club, then publicly renounced Reyna and Dynamite. He demands to be called the former IIWF Tag Team champions. He stooped so low two weeks ago that he attacked Medusa, the valet of Dirt Dog Unique Allah. What's next for this guy, roaming around ladies' rest rooms? Personally, I think someone should sneak Aerosmith's "Crazy" on the PA system the next time Petrow comes to the ring. ************************************************************************** -------------- UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL: AMERICAN PATRIOT ----------------- ************************************************************************** When you mention "patriotism" in the U.S.A., some may immediately think of baseball, hot dogs and apple pie. But you'd be hard-pressed to leave out one of the strongest symbols of the red, white and blue. I'm speaking, of course, about the American Patriot, a man who burst onto the IIWF scene in mid-December with an impressive win over the Masked Marauder. He kept that momentum going into Snow Brawl, edging Ronnie Paris in the Lethal Lottery to put himself and Marty Warnett in the battle royal. Since Snow Brawl, however, the American Patriot has fallen on hard times. He's dropped his only two decisions since the pay-per-view, prompting locker room rumors that all is not right with the man who wears the red, white and blue. Steve Roberts went so far as to suggest that the Patriot had been seen at a Portland nightclub with the Man of Steel, but had no proof to back up his claims. One thing is certain: we know very little about this mysterious individual of few words. That's why I took a camera crew to meet with the American Patriot last night... up close and personal. [Cut to Tim Dross outside a gym. With every breath, Dross proves that it is a brutally cold night. The windows of the gym behind him are steamed, but shadows dance across them and indicate action taking place inside.] TD: I'm outside the U.S.A. Gym here in downtown Portland where the American Patriot is helping some promising young wrestlers work on their moves. Ever since that little incident with Mr. Damage at the shopping mall in Alaska, the IIWF has been trying to improve its wrestlers' reputations, but I understand the American Patriot is a regular here -- as well as in his native San Diego -- donating his time in the interest of helping this great sport. Let's go inside and see if we can speak with the Patriot. [The viewers can almost feel the blast of warm air escape from the gym as Dross opens the door. Dross waves a hand in front of his face as if he could brush away the aroma of sweat and canvas. He peers toward the center of the room, where a wrestling ring has been erected. The American Patriot, wearing a windsuit and his trademark red, white and blue mask stands on the ring apron, his arms crossed on the top rope. He barks instructions to a tall, slender young man, who skillfully executes a hiptoss on his brawny opponent. Patriot can be heard yelling "Yeah! That's how you take him down!" He notices Dross and the camera crew, says something to the wrestlers in the ring, then hops down to meet the advancing Dross.] TD: Patriot, thanks for taking the time to speak with us tonight. I know you're a man of few words, but the fans of the IIWF would like to know more about you. [The Patriot only nods, leaving Dross hanging.] TD: Yes... well. I noticed Becky LaRue toying around with my notes earlier today, so I hope you'll bear with me. She can be so exasperating sometimes. You know... women. [The Patriot nods again. Dross rubs the back of his hand across his brow.] TD: Whew, it's warm in here. Well, let's get started. If you could be any animal, what.... oh damn. Uh, sorry Patriot. Becky obviously slipped that into my interview questions. Let's just start off with what brought you to the IIWF. AP: I've wrestled around the world in various other feds. But, I've always had my eyes on the IIWF. Everyone talks about how the IIWF has the best competition, and I wanted to come and see this first-hand. TD: Your finishing move, the Patriot Missile, has helped you to nine world championships and numerous other titles in other federations. Those are some pretty impressive credentials, but we all know that other federations aren't the IIWF. Do you think you can match that success here? AP: I think that it's very possible. But, I do know that it's going to take a lot of hard work and dedication to get to the top of the IIWF. TD: If a tree falls in the forest and no one hears it... oh damn, she did it again. Sorry, that's another Becky prank. Let's see, tell us your impression of the talent here in the IIWF. AP: There's no question that it's the best in the world. There are some excellent wrestlers in the other feds, but overall they don't even compare to the IIWF. TD: Tell us a little bit about your wrestling background. AP: Well, I wrestled a bit in high school and college, and I turned pro when I was 21. Three months later, I won my first world heavyweight title. I took a little break to finish college, then came back in 1995. Since then, I've won eight more world titles. TD: [under his breath] That's eight and one more... nine, yeah. Okay, so how did you get so patriotic and how did you get your name? AP: A lot of it had to do with the Persian Gulf War. I really got into believing in the country, and it took off from there. I got my name from a friend. He told me that I was an American Patriot, and it stuck. TD: Is there any truth to the rumor that you contribute more than $500,000 to the "Dole for President" campaign? Oh jeez, that's another one Becky slipped in. You don't have to... AP: No, no, it's okay. Dole and I are good friends. But, I did not want to cause problems with his campaign for President, so I was unable to contribute anything except my time and my support. TD: Back to the IIWF. Is there any wrestler in the federation whom you're looking forward to meeting in the ring? AP: There's one guy in particular. He calls himself the German Juggernaut. Obviously, he has no respect for America, and I want to teach him that respect. TD: German Juggernaut... you're speaking of course about Otto Verhoeven. [The Patriot only nods, offering no additional comments] TD: Okayyyy. Tell me, does smoked salmon give you gas? Oh jeez, I'm going to kill Becky! AP: I don't like fish, so no. TD: You didn't really have to answer that... um, never mind. Do you have any final words for our audience tonight? AP: I'm here to put on a good show for all the fans around the world. You guys are what makes this all work, and I appreciate it. I hope to see you when I come to your town. [The camera gets a tight closeup of the Patriot's masked face. Fade. Cut back to Tim in the studio.] The American Patriot is obviously a man of few words. If he lets his actions speak for him, we're going to have some very long matches in the IIWF in the coming weeks. And to think he's watching Otto Verhoeven... wow! Germany and the United States have met in two World Wars -- Verhoeven and the Patriot colliding could be a third. I wasn't able to get a lot of information out of the Patriot last night, but my "masked" guest next week has never been at a loss for words. Next week, fans, get ready to meet The Sandman... up close and personal! ************************************************************************** ---------------------- WEDNESDAY NIGHT PREVIEW ------------------------- ************************************************************************** There is plenty of action scheduled for the IIWF Coliseum tomorrow night, and Becky LaRue and I will have all the results and highlights from tomorrow's show in the "Wednesday War Room."
